Great moves to stay active at your work desk

Roughly 86% of Americans sit at a desk for work. Even with the innovation of sit/stand desks, this number is still staggering. So, what can you do to stay active at your work desk?

  • Stretching - A simple stretching routine will help keep the blood flowing and keep your body moving. You can easily try breaking down a problem while standing up and stretching for a few minutes without having to take your mind off your work.

  • Take A Break - Take a quick 5-minute break every hour to walk a lap around the office. This could be a great time to go and make copies, take a quick lap to talk with a co-worker, rather than sent an email, or to stretch your legs for a few minutes. This will also help clear your mind before heading to a meeting.

  • Mini Workout - Small Workout Equipment is portable and can be kept at your desk. A lightweight dumbbell or even a resistance band can help to complete a quick workout. A short workout will help keep your body moving. Next time you take that phone call, pair it with some arm curls or resistance band pulls.

  • Try the "half-hour" challenge - Set an alarm on your phone or computer to go off every 30 minutes. Once it goes off, you will have to complete a two-minute physical activity challenge in your office space. You can try walking or jogging in place, doing jumping jacks, lunges, push-ups or even wall sits.

  • Water, Water & More Water - Keep a large water bottle at your desk and take regular sips throughout the day. This will help you stay hydrated and energized. Also, it will get you up and moving to refill the water bottle when it is empty & keep moving!

Try to be creative with finding new ways to keep you moving and energized through the day. Incorporating mini-breaks of fitness into your daily routine will help you get out of your chair and keep your body moving. This is a great way to get started with living a more active lifestyle! Once you start incorporating activity throughout your day, you may find you have more energy to incorporate it into your non-working hours, as well.
